One body, three primes

An illustration of how a camera lens works. Wide open for the vows, stopped down for the room — the aperture is the whole decision, and it gets made in about a second.

The read

Read the light, preserve the detail

The histogram shows how tones are distributed from shadows to highlights. Exposure depends on the scene and the intended look; protecting important highlights helps preserve detail in photographs and footage.

The frame

Nothing sits in the middle

The rule of thirds is a useful starting point: placing a subject near an intersection can balance it against its surroundings. Centred compositions can be just as effective — the scene decides.

What I shoot

What each one includes

Hours, deliverables and what happens on the day — in stills and in video. Open any one of the four.

    In their words

Half the job is light. The other half is knowing which thirty seconds of an eleven-hour day — or which two degrees on a plate — is the one that matters.

    The method

On a set everything runs tethered, so the kitchen or the brand sees each frame before it goes cold. On a wedding I shoot quietly and move constantly, and nobody is asked to do it again for the camera. Every frame is culled by hand and graded on a calibrated screen.
